Apologists often say how caste is about dignity of labour and division of labour. But everyone aspires to be either Brahmin, Kshatriya or Vaishya.
How many of us think of ourselves as Shudra, the service-provider?
Service-provider sounds so much better than servant.
When a guru asks his followers to do seva, everyone is eager. Yet, how many of them treat their servant/service-provider at home with dignity?
We say Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan…we make fun of Baniyas in our movies….but when was the last time someone said Jai to the Janitor, the cleaner, the sweeper?
Holding the broom has become mostly a photo-op or a political move. But the act of cleaning is never given the respect it deserves.
Only in our society, the people who cleaned were deemed dirty, polluted and untouchables.
Such a horrid idea, when you think about it.
