Shiva Plays Dumb Charades

Aug 18, 2011 | Books.

My Latest – A Children’s book !

  • How does Shiva talk to us without speaking?
  • Who is the demon of forgetfulness?
  • What is the secret of the Natraj statute?

Five children are having fun one evening, playing dumb charades, when Shiva appears and wants to join in! Shiva turns out to be the best at dumb charades, as well as in asking riddles. He can say so much with only his actions! He also tells the children wonderful stories with the help of the many objects he carries with him, like the rattle drum, the crescent moon and a fountain of water that rises from his head. Soon, thanks to Shiva’s playfulness, the children know much more about Shiva and the other gods—even more than their parents !

    Dear Devdutt
I read all your books for children.i liked it. The message you want to give is quite lucid and logical. However i feel stronhgly about the illustrations! They spoil the quality of your books.. your illustrations have a mystical quality that add to the aura of the subject.

I just read this book, and found it quite interesting and lucid for children… I would suggest people to make their children to read your books in order to have a taste for the treasures in our traditions… But I agree with Snigdha regarding the quality of the pictures… First of all, a bit of colouring can be more attractive… I liked the pictures of the children, their parents and the monkeys, but the moustache of Shiva somehow mars the picture… Of course, I acknowledge the existence of sculptures in which Shiva is shown sporting a moustache, but then the one in this picture had a strange curve which somehow I did not like… However, I appreciate the depth of Mr. Pattanaik’s undrstanding of child psychology and his command of the means to communicate tough things to them.
